Full text transcript of the John Wick 3 review:
John Wick, Chapter three is an action movie, Tour de force, a stunt spectacular.
You might be like Grace. So was the last movie. Oh, this levels up like you wouldn’t believe.
And in fact, I would go so far as to say that this chapter potentially demonstrates that maybe, just maybe, stunt work is an art form that does deserve an Oscar category. There’s been a lot of discussion about that over the past few years, and I think this is the most compelling argument yet. Have all the Academy members see this movie and I think they’ll change their minds. Seriously, it’s work like this and the recent Season two Episode five of Bery on HBO that truly make legit cases for recognition in this category. And John, with Chapter three, stunt and fight choreographer Jonathan Eusebio, along with director checks to House Guy who I believe has a cameo Alfred Hitchcock style here as John Wick rounds a street corner on a horse. If you know a church to Belski, looks like I think you’ll spot him, but I think he could do a little bit of a better job playing himself up in the future. He’s earned it. Alfred Hitchcock yourself, buddy. Front and center. And cinematographer Dan Laursen returning from the last chapter, although turning up the knob on those hues right in New York City is stunning. I’m a little biased being a New Yorker myself, but wow, it looks pretty here. But those three guys craft an action symphony. I wouldn’t call it an action symphony that actually manages to reach the artistic heights of Tarantino’s Tarantino’s best kill bill action sequences. Chapter three makes it clear that this isn’t the final chapter. So what’s Uma Thurman up to? Don’t worry. We’ll talk about Halle Berry.
Halle Berry is good, but she’s I think she definitely sells her action sequences. I’ll just say this year there’s Halle Berry section later on in the review. But I mean, also there’s a credit to Uma Thurman, stunt double, who’s famous in the business. But I think Uma Thurman or at least that team sold a female action heroine just a little bit better than here. And Halle Berry, has it made it seem like Halle Berry’s assist from her two dogs was almost because to even the odds, because she is a woman. And I don’t know if that’s necessary, considering some of the other female fighters we’ve seen in cinema history. But anyway, Halle Berry does a good job and I think they should call Uma Thurman. All right. So while Tarantino is quite the wordsmith, as well as doing amazing artistic action sequences drawn with Chapter three is almost entirely wall-to-wall action. And I’m not complaining. There are exchanges of dialogue here and they’re either very comedic. Mark Costco’s is hilarious. Wow. And there’s a fantastic line about a dog like. Wow, like I’m surprised at how on point that line is. It’s perfect. So either the dialogue exchanges are comedic or they put it like a video game, setting up the next furious set of action sequences. And it’s a credit again to this team that they are so inventive, creating so many action sequences that never get boring. You would think that how many how many different fights can you can you choreograph? And it seems the answer is an unlimited amount when you have this team.
The variations here from locations including both geographical and architectural. Oh, it’s like Architectural Digest in here.
If you were an architect, Architectural Digest nerd, you know exactly what I’m talking about. I’m a big architecture fan, but also props guest fighters. That opening sequence, I believe it’s a basketball player. The guy’s just so tall. It’s fantastic. The choice of weapon to obstacles that are put in John Wick, John Wicks way. And also, I have to say, kudos to the sound of VFX departments, which help make each action sequence truly a visceral experience.
It’s so loud and I love it.
And the blood splatter, they’ve really perfected the blood splatter here almost to the point of it becoming a little desensitized. And I think that might be intentional to take a little bit of the edge off it. Does it feel very much like a video game, particularly in terms of, you know, the double taps, although you’ll find in one sequence Gelwix got to go for, like, infinite taps? It’s hilarious. It’s great.
I was so into this movie that for the first twenty minutes, which is literally non-stop action sequences, I could not take my eyes off the screen. I mean I did once or twice and I was like, this isn’t working, I’m missing stuff. So I had I made the mistake of getting nachos. So during that time I had to literally just feel around in the tray because I didn’t want to take my eyes off the screen. I got a little cheese on my back door. It came out. But I just I’ve never had to do that before. And speaking of things that I’ve never had happened to me before, I’ve never reacted. This out loud to a movie I was doing, I was on, I was wincing, I was also selling quite heartily throughout the film. And again, that’s never happened to me at this level before. I really, truly was an experience. Now, I don’t want to undercut the film in terms of its script because like a good video game, it does a very good job. The best job yet, in fact, of building this world of assassins, including who’s who, the rules and tender like markers and tickets. I’m like, I’m starting to get this before.
I just seem like Keanu Reeves was running around like crazy, but now he seems to be running around like crazy with a purpose. Speaking of Keanu Reeves, he continues to shine here. This is his best gig since The Matrix, although instead of the franchise getting worse, it gets better. He does have stunt doubles, but he does a lot of the action himself in a suit, no less. And it makes a difference. And in addition to selling his skill set, he also really sells his pain, both physical and emotional. Oh, he’s great. As Didkovsky shows, his character says he doesn’t disappoint. The Costco’s is like Bond henchmen level good here, killer cheekbones, some of the lighting here, they really make use of that. There’s also a very cool thing where he and his henchmen dressed all in black and are able to hide in the shadows.
And I never got tired of that either. I don’t wanna give anything away. All right. I also love that his own goes is two top henchmen are from the raid movies and they get the respect that they deserve. I appreciated that.
And while Halle Berry’s role is limited, she gets an amazing extended action sequence that, as I said, shows that two dogs are as impressive in a fight as two guns. I was like, oh, I’d like I’ll take two of those. Two is Lara Croft says, I’ll take to this franchise’s love of man’s best friend is definitely one of its signature touches. You know, it almost was like, you know, you would think you think at some points maybe it’s turning into a running gag. And they do get a lot of they do get a lot of humor out of it. But I think that also in this chapter, I think it really clicked what the dogs are like, a respite, an emotional oasis from the nonstop violence. And that’s what they mean to John Wick, who’s on his love. His relationship with his new dog is so great. And I think that the audience starts to see that, too. You know, just little moments in the movie where it’s like a little break. And who doesn’t love spending a break with that adorable dog? Very well behaved dogs as well. I loved them. Back to Barry. It’s really nice. Nice to have her representing women here, because it’s disappointing that earlier in the film, Angelica Houston’s operation has the men training as assassins and the women training as ballerinas.
I was like, what the heck’s happening here?
I mean, intense ballerinas, to be sure. And you because I know there’s been talk of a spin off of a female assassin movie featuring a ballerina, but that’s not alluded to here at all. They’re just ballerinas. And that kind of gender division, I feel is a bit too antiquated. And I was a tad disappointed to see it here in the film. But luckily, you know, Halle Berry ended up making up for it. There’s also educate Dylan, who more than holds their own opposite seasoned actors. But I like them far more on billions, I have to say, because while I appreciate this franchise cast Rubirosa in the last chapter. And now, Dylan, something here about their role just doesn’t doesn’t quite click for some reason and bronze here and he can do accents. And then also Gotham’s penguin has a cameo. I think quite appropriately, he put them in a group where I thought he really fit audience favorites, favorites, Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane and Lance Riddick all return. And speaking of Riddick, it was wonderful to see the concierge step out from behind his desk.
So, yes, along with movies like Kill Bill and the Red One, and particularly to my favorite, is Kill Bill one and the Raid two. I like the first chapter, you know, opposite chapters. But this I would say the John Chapter three is up there as a thrilling ode to the art of the movie action. It could be one of those glossy books. In fact, it’s that impressive. And I can’t wait for Chapter four called Hominum, and I think she’d be absolutely fantastic. And some people are saying Halle Berry spinoff. I don’t think she could carry it herself, to be honest with you. But, you know, there’s talk of a Charlize Theron Fast and Furious spinoff, a force. You know, there’s a lot of female all action, all female action projects percolating. And I think, well, Halle Berry couldn’t had one up. I think she could definitely be a part of one of them. Could have had one up, though. She’s probably like, why is nobody calling me somebody call with me. All right. So that’s my review of John Chapter three. I’m very excited to hear your own thoughts about the movie Downbelow. And of course, as always, you can check out some more videos right now.
And a.
